MAN CONFESSED TO THEFTS
Shareholder Stole From Company (New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, July 29.. A 56-year-old shop worker, who would probably not have been found out, had confessed ib the police, thefts totalling £2OO from his employer, said DetectiveSergeant A. E. Leadley in the Magistrate’s Court in Dunedin. Commenting that it was a most unusuhl ease, Mr J. G. Warrington, S.M., made an order for suppression -pt the man’s name, convicted him afid' ordered him to come' up for sentence if called on within 12 months.
Detective-Sergeant Leadley Saia that the man had called at the Criminal Investigation Branch office on July. 22, and confessed to thefts dating back to July; 1957. He was suffering from considerable , remorse arid said he Was thinking of taking his own life.He had been employed by the :cohcem for over 27 years and owned shares in it. Without a close stock .cheek; the thefts would never '; have been known. The money had been repaid from the shares he had in the .concern. ■■ ■' ■ Mr H. J. Ross, for the accused, said the man’s employer did not Wish to 'prefer charges. Counsel- asked- for subpression of the (han’s name so that the concernwould not be embarrassed in reinstating him.
