Surrey 183 For Seven (NX. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON. July 28. A defiant seventh-wicket stand for Surrey by E. A. Bedser and D. Gibson held up Uie South Africans at ths Oval today. ' The tourists had dismissed the first six Surrey batsmen. tor 115. /The seventh-wicket pair put on 67 th 85 minutes to enable Surrey to score seven for 133 at stumps in reply to the South Africans' six for 338 declared. The Springboks added 85 in 75 minutes tn the morning before declaring. J. P. Fellows-Smith put on an aggressive 43 in even time. He hit two sixes and three fours in a stand of 63 with S. O'Linn. The fast bowler. N. A. T. Adcock, soon had Surrey in trouble. He trapped J. Sdrich leg-before with only three scored. M. Stewart and D Fletcher added 41 before Fletcher was caught off Adcock. Stewart made 53 in three hours before being caught by the wicketkeeper, O'Linn. With Adcock tiring. E. A. Bedser and Gibson gained the Initiative.
