PEOPLE IN THE PLAY
In 20-year-old Michael Cleary, New South Wales Rugby has produced another Charles Eastes. In his interstate debut against Queensland, Cleary scored three tries and showed great pace and determination. He only handled the ball seven times, but the Australian critics were very impressed with his attacking ability.
The New Zealand pace bowler. B- C. Mota, must be among the keenest of cricketers. Already he is training hard for the coming season. He attends g y m n a s ium classes on two nights each week, and on at least two other evenings has training runs. Motz enjoyed considerable success last season, and should again be a strong candidate for the New Zealand team, to play the M.C.C.
The Canterbury representative skier, A. D. Coberger, will be unable to take part in major
ski-ing events this winter be- » cause of a damaged cartilage. Coberger was one of the Jkgtt-WPI best perform- jM| ers in Canter- ? ■B’Wl bury last sea- »- WE J® || son. rounding sVWR® off some sound ski - ing with - his second jW- ’
placing in the combined at the national titles at Coronet Peak. Coberger’s loss will be keenly felt by the Christchurch Ski Club at the Canterbury inter-dub championships at Mount Cheeseman on September 24 and 25.
Fay Wilson (Lincoln), who was a member of the second- 1 ary schools’ representative ■ basketball team who played 1 against the Fiji team in 1957, has this year been selected as a member of the Canterbury Sub-association team. S£e is now playing as a wing attack.
