U.A.R. AND PERSIA
Relations Worsen
(N.Z. Press-Association— Copyright) (Rec. 10 p.m.) CAIRO, July 27.
The Persian envoy to the United Arab Republic, Mr Djamchid Gharib, prepared to leave the country today as relations between the Arab nations and Persia worsened. I
Last night he - was summoned to the Foreign Ministry and told that U.A.R.-Persian relations had broken down. This was the latest move in the dispute over Persia’s recognition of Israel. Earlier, President Nasser announced in Alexandria that the U.A.R. Embassy in Teheran was being closed. The dispute started after the Shah of Persia said in a press statement on Saturday that his
country had recognised Israel. He was reported as adding that this was nothing new since recognition was accorded de facto years ago and an envoy appointed to Tel Aviv (he was later recalled).
Yesterday, a spokesman for the Arab League said the league’s boycott bureau had called on all Arab States to ban Persia from attending the Arab oil conference in Beirut in October.
