Sportsman’s Notebook CANTERBURY'S SUCCESSES IN HOCKEY CHALLENGE SHIELD

When Canterbury drew with Otago in its first defence of the New Zealand Hockey Challenge Shield for the season last month, it was the forty-second challenge which the province had successfully withstood since 1908. Canterbury has held the shield since it won it from Auckland at a shield tournament in Christchurch in 1956, and has withstood five challenges since that date. Canterbury first won the shield as far back as 1912, but never before has it held the trophy for such a long period. Auckland has the best record for tenure of the trophy, having defended the shield successfully on 63 occasions, and it is Auckland which Canterbury has to fear most in the remainder of the challanges this season. Auckland has the next challenge, and the game will be played on August 13. Auckland has also held the shield for the longest time in one stretch, being unbeaten from 1932 to 1945, when Canterbury beat it 4-3 in the first match played for the shield after the Second World War. * • • Table Tennis Losses Although the touring Australian table tennis team has not yet been defeated in its eight matches in New Zealand, the players have not achieved outstanding success in their doubles matches. The pair, G. Jennings and M. Wilcox, won the New South Wales title on the evening before the start of their tour, and are regarded as a fine combination. However, since their first match in the Dominion they have lost in doubles to J. Armstrong and B. A Foster (South Island), Foster and J. Dougall (Otago), R. Kawharu and E. Harris (Marlborough) and M. L. Dunn and J. S. Crossley (Wellington).
