CAIRN OF PEACE
Hanmer Marble From N.Z.
A small block of marble, from Hanmer has been sent to Rome as a New Zealand contribution to a Cairn of Peace which will be unveiled in October at the site of the world ploughing ehampionship. The idea of the erection of a commemorative monument as a Cairn of Peace at world final sites .originated in Canada in 1963 when, the first world contest was held. The underlying thought was that a chain of these monuments to man’s endeavours in the basic tilling of the soil should eventually span the world. The Cairn of Peace at Rome, which is to be unveiled on the Italian Agricultural Department’s experimental farm, Tor Mancina, is only a short distance from the paddock in which the thirty entrants from throughout the world will compete for the title of world ploughing champion. It will include pieces of stone from all parts of the world where ploughing contests are held to select competitors for the world final. On each stone is engraved the country of origin and the whole will be surmounted by a symbolic plough, a replica of the model of the Esso Golden Plough Trophy. New Zealand’s Hanmer stone is 6 Inches long and 3 Inches deep and the lettering “New Zealand” has already been inscribed on the stone in Italy.
