CHANGEOVER TO BUSES
Unions’ Threat To Stop Work (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 28. The Lyall Bay tram route would be changed to diesel bus operation bn Sunday, the Wellington City Council Transport Committee announced last night A statement supplied by the chairman of the committee (Cr. M. N. Manthel) said: “If the union persists in its threat not to man Lyall Bay buses on Monday the council will regret any inconvenience to which the travelling public may be subject.” He said the changeover was in line with council policy. The current award enabled the council to require operators to man the diesel buses and to carry out any other duties required. Mr P. M. Butler, -a spokesman for the combined city council unions’ action committee, said today that nearly all city services would probably stop if the council dismissed tramwaymen who refused to operate buses on the Lyall Bay route. The action committee of combined City Council workers’ unions tonight discussed the dispute with the Minister of Labour (Mr Hackett) and the Mayor (Mr F. J. Kitts, M.P.). The committee will meet the transport and staff committees of the City Council tomorrow morning.
