Sportsman’s Notebook CANTERBURY RUGBY TEAM FOR NORTH ISLAND TOUR

The 19-man Canterbury Rugby team which is to make a fourmatch tour of North Island Unions next month was announced by the president of the Canterbury Rugby Union (Mr H. C. Blazey) yesterday afternoon. Five regular members of the team—M. W. Allen, J. N. Creighton, P. G. Bark, R. D. Hoskin (all of University) and R. M. Smith (Christchurch)—are not available. Four players will have their first games for Canterbury on this tour. They are D. C. Leary, a former Otago representative full-back, who has been playing at centre for University but who could be used in both capacities on tour; A. Coleman, a Canterbury Sub-unions and New Zealand Universities five-eighths; W. Strang (University) and the big Linwood lock, R. Abel. The players chosen to make the tour are:— Backs: W. F. Led by Neil Harvey, the cricketers* team included such internationals as Norman O’Neill. lan Craig, Graham Thomas, Bill Watson and Alan Davidson. O’Neill pitched for Harvey’s team and again demonstrated that he is the most menacing speed ball pitcher in Australian baseball. The game was watched by a crowd of about 5000. * * * Cricket Coaching The Auckland Cricket Association’s indoor coaching school opened its 1960 season at the Epsom Show Grounds recently. Last year 130 Auckland club cricketers took advantage of the night coaching scheme. This season senior grade players from seven local district associations, schoolboys and women cricketers will be coached for the remainder of the winter at two nets or on the mat pitches in the Exhibition Hall. A charge of 2s fid a head is being made to cover expenses. It is also hoped to hold an outdoor school at Eden Park commencing about the end of October.
