British Bank Loans Rise Nearly £loom (N.Z. Press Association —Copyright) LONDON, July 26. British bank loans have risen by nearly £loom sterling in the last five weeks in spite of credit restrictions imposed by the Government. ■Hie figures issued by the 11 London clearing banks tonight showed that advances rose by £99.1m in the five weeks be-' tween June 16 and July 20—the highest jump since March last year. Financial circles said holiday spending was undoubtedly the main reason for the big increase. On June 23 the Government increased the bank rate, the key to interest rates in general, from 5 per cent, to 6 per cent. English banks were then ordered to deposit a further 1 per cent of their total deposits with the State-owned Bank of England. SIR JOSEPH G. D.
