Surveyors who measured the height of Mount Egmont last century did not do a bad job. They decided on 8260 ft. A new survey made last March by a team using modern equipment fixed the height at 8258 ft„ two feet less than the estimate the chief surveyor of Taranaki (Mr T. Humphries) made between 1873 and 1884. “No maps will be changed.” said the present chief surveyor (Mr C. Allen). “The existing height of 8260 ft will be marked on all maps.”—(P.A.)
