BRITISH RADAR SECRETS
Espionage Bid By Russians (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, July 22. Russia has been trying to spy out Britain’s radar secrets, the “News Chronicle” said today. The newspaper said this was behind Mr Macmillan’s disclosure to the House of Commons that 18 leading Soviet agents have been deported from Britain during the last two years. The agents began by checking on the habits of people working in Britain’s radar and electronic research establishments—paying particular attention to the morals of these workers. The “News Chronicle” said: “The agents were briefed to approach men with either homosexual tendencies or those likely to be attracted to women, whom the ring were prepared to provide as bait. Experience in the Russian intelligence service has shown that blackmail is far more successful in securing information than offers of money. “It was because no-one fell for these temptations that the agents were eventually suspected. Their movements near secret establishments and their approaches to workers were reported,” the newspaper added.
