FERRIER IN THE LEAD

The Australian-born Jim Ferrier yesterday returned a record 66 to stand second after 54 holes in the United States professional golfers’ championship at Akron. Doug Sanders, of Miami Beach, had a one-under-par 69 to take the third round lead with a total of 210. The final round will be played today. One stroke behind Sanders, grouped in second place, were Ferrier, a 45-year-old veteran from California, 48-year-old Sam Snead and the second round leader. Jay Herbert. Arnold Palmer, the United States masters and open champion lost all but a slim chance of capturing the nation’s third big golf title when he turned in a poor 75 in the third round. He was six strokes behind Sanders with a total bf 218.
