HOLIDAY IN NEW ZEALAND
Australian Girls On Scooter
Two pretty Australian girls riding a motor scooter along Ferry road yesterday afternoon got more than their share of turned heads as Sunday drivers slowed to watch them pass. Painted in red on their white crash helmets is the word “Australia,” and the outline of a kangaroo. The girls, 20-year-old Beverley Theodore, from Kingaroy in Queensland, and 21-year-old Hilary Hyde from" the Melbourne suburb of Hawthorn East, are both in New Zealand on working holidays. Beverley and Hilary are not travelling through New Zealand together, but they live at the same hostel in Christchurch and they teamed up for yesterday’s scooter ride Each has another Australian girl as a “mate” for her travels. Beverley and her friend are touring by scooter, while Hilary and her companion have been hitchhiking. Reminding Beverley of her trip through the North Island is a “bite” out of the scooter windshield and a graze across one of the crash helmets.
“That was something that put us into hospital for four days before we got used to the shingle roads,’’ she said. In Kingaroy Beverley is a typist. Before coming to this country Hilary was a typing pool supervisor for Victoria’s State Electricity Commission. Hilary belongs to the Youth Hostels Association of Australia and her parka is studded with badges of the association's different sections and souvenir patches from towns she has visited.
