D. SMITH FAILS IN ATTEMPT
Olympic Qualifying Standard (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, July 23. D. Smith, a New Zealander studying at Oxford University, today failed in an attempt to meet the Olympic qualifying standard he needs to achieve before he can represent his country in Rome. Smith finished third in the 800 metres in an amateur athletic meeting at Bournemouth, Hampshire. His time was Imin 54sec—4Jsec outside the Olympic qualifying ■tandard A Sl-year-old British accountancy student. J. Wenk, won the event in Imin 52.95ec. He beat B. Hewson, the European 1500 metres champion, for the second time in eight days.
