Table Tennis Armstrong, Miss Williamson Win Canterbury Titles

J. Armstrong and Miss J. Williamson. both members of the Eagles club, won the men s and women’s singles titles when the Canterbury table tennis championsfiips were completed last evening. Armstrong’s singles win was his third in succession. It was Miss Williamson’s eighth victory in the Canterbury women’s singles event.

In the final of the men’s singles Armstrong beat V. N. Brightwell, who had won the title in the three [years before Armstrongs first win in 1958. but only after an enthralling five-game struggle. Armstrong’s defence was fully tested by Brightwell’s attacking play. Brightwell led for most of the first game, achieving success in forcing Armstrong out of position. Armstrong lost points when [attempting to hit winners with [his forehand, and he was unable |to find the table with these drives. Armstrong )ed at 18-17 in this game, but Brightwell won the next four points. Armstrong came back strongly in the second and third games, and in the third in particular he was well in control. Brightwell recovered to take the fourth, but Armstrong was always in the lead in the final game. Brightwell trailed 10-20 in the final game but. with the aid of a net ball, an edge ball and some careful play, he won six more points before conceding the title. At 20-13 in this game the ball broke, and play was held up. Miss Williamson last eveninf showed quite the worst play of any of her matches since returning to Christchurch earb’ this year. In the final of the singles against the consistent Mrs J Shadbolt Miss Williamson made far too many errors for a player of her class. This is not to deny fine play by Mrs Shadbolt, who defended grimly, and varied her play well with an occasional attacking shot Although Miss Williamson finally took the women’s singles title, some of the limelight in this event was deflected to her sister-in-law, Mrs A. Williamson. Unseeded, Mrs Williamson eliminated the third-seeded Mrs T. May on Saturday afternoon, and lost to Mrs Shadbolt, the South Island titleholder, only 27-25 in the fourth game of an even match. Men’s Doubles Brightwell and T. R. D. Flint aded another to their many successes in the Canterbury men’s doubles event, but only after a hard struggle with Armstrong and B. D. P. Williamson. Armstrong and Williamson showed good form to win the third and fourth games after losing the first two but. from 10-all in the fifth game, they scored no further points. Mrs Shadbolt and Mrs J. Brown, the top South Canterbury player, gained a popular victory in the women’s doubles final. This pair played together in the Waikarl competitions several seasons ago. They took full advantage of lapses in the play or Miss Williamson and Mrs T. May. Mrs Brown scored with hard forehand drives, and she was well supported by the steady play of Mrs Shadbolt.

The brother-and-sister combination of Williamson and Miss Williamson won another title for the Eagles club when they took the mixed doubles final in convincing fashion from Brightwell and Mrs May. Williamson and Miss Williamson were always in control. P. Wood from South Canterbury was not tested to win the junior singles title, although D. Kalin showed promise in the final. D. Mcßride won four junior titles, and Miss J. Rich three. Wood also won the men’s plate. Result? were: OPEN EVENTS Men's Single* Second Round.—J. Armstrong beat L. Olla, 21-4. 21-10. 21-3; K.
