E. J. Croy Wins Qualifying Event For Silver Plough

E. J. Croy, of Wakanui, won the Rakaia qualifying event for the Atlantic Silver Plough by a comfortable margin of seven points at the 27th Royal thatch conducted by the Rakaia Ploughing Association on Mr N. B. Trott’s property at Hatfield on Saturday. The match attracted about sixty entries from many parts of Canterbury and Otago. Conditions for ploughing were ideal and the events were watched by a large number of spectators. Second placing in the qualifying event went to W. A. Bradley, of Courtenay, with 131.6 points, and third, to I. J. Maw (Rakaia) with 126.6 points. A highlight of the day was a special event for seven competitors who had already qualified in other districts. This was won by a West Melton ploughman, C. E. Read with 151 points. R. M. Kingsbury (Ashburton) was second with 146.6 points and W. A. Simpson (Oamaru). third, only .3 of a point behind. “Slipped Badly” Competitors in the qualifying event had slipped badly on their finishes, said Mr K. H. Boyle, one of the judges. “Some let their ploughs in too late and their ins and outs were not as good as they could have been,” he said. “The finishes were very poor—in fact, there was not one good one. They had plenty of time and the paddock was not difficult to work. I can't understand why they were so poor,” he said. The judges of the Young Farmers’ Club classes (Messrs D. J. Stewart and K. Busch) said the standard was very good. There were several excellent finishes and the feering was outstanding, they said. N. Davidson —a competitor in this class—was awarded the special prize for the best feering of the day. Messrs G. H. Fraser and J Brohan, the judges of the three or more, and four furrows classes, considered the ground was a little dry. They said the ploughing, however, was very good and up to the usual high standard. Dog Trials There were 62 entries in the dog trials. The judge (Mr P. Newton) said the hoggets provided a very difficult test. “Although there were not very many high scoring runs, some of the leading competitors handled the situation extremely well,” he said. The oldest competitor in the trials —77 years old Mr A. Curtis —was the most successful and took first and second in the Open Maiden event, and second and third in the Open class. The two dogs he used were Laddie and Hemp. Mr Curtis is believed to be the oldest competitor in the country. K. O’Connell’s Star also showed up well and took first placings in the District Maiden, and the District events. The Open event

was won by R. M. Wilson’s Trump. The judges were: National qualifying event. Messrs K. H. Boyle, T. F. Carter, and L. E. Skivington. Special class, Messrs J. B. Wyllie, J. D. Henderson and J C. Brooker. Y.F.C. class. Messrs K. Busch and D. J. Stewart. Other classes, Messrs R. W. Coleman, J. S. T. McGiffert, G. H. Fraser and J. Brohan.
