Whineray led his team out on to its quest for its flrst test victory over South ’Africa in South Africa for 32 years, but it was comfortably filled. Then Dryburgh missed his second penalty. After 28 minutes Dryburgh kicked for touch. Clarke took the ball with a clear yard to spare, but the South African touch fudge signalled a line-out. The Springboks forced a five-yard scrum and from that position scored the first try of the match.

Lockyear ran wide and reverse passed to Oxlee, who dived over for a try. Dryburgh missed the conversion. After 30 minutes the score was: New Zealand 3. South Africa 3. The Springboks charged through when there was a breakdown in passing between Briscoe and Nesbit. They took play fiom their own 10vard mark to the New Zealand goalline. South Africa 3 In the best New Zealand back move of the game, Nesbit ran blind and reverse passed to Briscoe who set the line away with Watt up as first five-eighths. Watt kicked ahead for McMullen’s Wing but Dryburgh put the ball Into touch. The New Zealanders were now well on the attack. Clarke was playing a fine game at full-back. With play 10 yards from the Springbok line and immediately in front of the posts. Young won the ball and while it was still in the back row Lockyear came round off side and then Pelser, but the referee saw neither infringement The All Blacks put bn the pressure but did not make much headway against a stream of penalties. The New Zealanders had a glorious scoring chance but they let it slip by losing the line-out.

Several runs from broken play saw McMullen. Lineen and Clarke checked after valiant efforts. The AU Blacks were still around the Springbok twenty-five and there were about 12 minutes remaining. A double penalty against the tourists, the second of the match for a delay in retiring, allowed the Springboks to ease the pressure. Then with nine minutes remaining the All Blacks got the points they needed. Try By Meads

Meads scored a try from a scrum on the twenty-five. The ball went back to Nesbit, who sent a perfectly judged kick for McMullen. Antelme got his hands to it just before McMullen, but the New Zealand wing tackled him. Laidlaw jumped in, grabbed the ball, and swung it to Lineen who, in turn, passed to Meads, who went over 10 yards from the corner. Clarke converted. New Zealand 8, South Africa

With three minutes to go, Briscoe sent the ball back to Clarke, standing deep on his own 10-yard mark. Clarke, with a beautiful kick, scored a dropped goal. New Zealand 11. South Africa 3.
