HISTORIC PLACES TRUST
Place Of Regional
Committees
The general policy of the National Historic Places Trust and the support wanted from regional committees of the trust will be discussed at a conference called by the trust to be held in Wellington on August 24, 25, and 26. This is the result of a resolution asking for a conference passed at a recent meeting of the Canterbury Regional Committee of the trust.
Two representatives from the 17 regional committees have been invited to attend the conference. Mr W. L. Stewart, of Rangiora, and Messrs J. Karetai and -J. L. Hewland will represent Canterbury at the conference. Mr Kare-1 tai will not be able to attend the conference for the full time. The chairman of the Canterbury regional committee (Mr W. J. Gardner), who is also a member of the trust, said yesterday that the regional committees were composed of volunteers. “Everything should be done to encourage them,” said Mr Gardner. He explained the normal working of the trust. “A project j comes from a local committee. It might be to preserve or to purchase a historic building. We look to the regional committees for ] interest and support before we undertake very much. “Sometimes,” said Mr Gardner “we take on work of a national, kind.” He cited the efforts made by the trust to preserve St Paul’s Cathedral in Wellington and the purchasing of the Waimate north vicarage, which is now a museum. “On the whole, how alive the trust is depends on how alive the regional committees are,” Mr Gardner said.. The director of the Canterbury Museum (Dr. Roger Duff) is also on the trust.
