POETRY
Voices ot the Dawn. A Selection of Korean Poetry. Translated and introduced by Peter Hyun. John Murray. 128 pp. This selection ranges over the whole field of Korean poetry, from the sixth century to the present day. By his excellent introduction, as well as by the clarity and beauty of his translation, Mr Hyun has made it possible for the Western reader who is not a specialist in Oriental literature to gain more than an accidental pleasure from this surprisingly rich, source. There is scarcely a poem, in the book which has not an immediate and lasting impact. Until the influence of Western culture becomes almost over-powering, the native literature preserves a remarkable homogeneity. The imagery is concrete, simple, and appealing. It is perhaps a pity that this altogether delightful collection should have suffer from inferior printing and binding. One does not display orchids in old saucepans.
