BULK HANDLING BOOM

It looks as though bulk handling of grain on the farm in the South Island will soon be a novelty no more. Last season about 18 to 20 bulk headers are known to have been working in the South Island. The number next harvest is likely to be 40 and could be 50, according to Mr C. J. Crosbie, machinery instructor of the Department of Agriculture. In Canterbury the number of bulk machines is likely to jump from about 17 last season to 35 next.

A number of new machines will go into use, but in a number of cases bag headers are being converted to diialpurpose machines which can be altered to handle in bulk or in bag In a matter of 10 minutes or so. Where there were about two bulk headers in South Canterbury last season It is expected that next harvest there' will be at least eight and in one district four bulk machines may be working next harvest, compared with one last season.
