EXTRA SCHOOL HOLIDAYS
Full Discretion
For Committees
School committees next year will have full discretion to grant six half-days for special holidays to their schools for any purpose they like. This decision was made by the Canterbury Education Board yesterday, following a recommendation from its secretary-manager (Mr W. P. Spencer) and its senior inspector (Mr L. J. Broomfield). Under the board’s present regulations, school committees were empowered to grant two half-days for shows, two for picnics, and two for sports, said Mr Spencer. “But it would be just a? well to allow school committees to observe those six half-days in any way they like, provided their schools remain open' for 400 halfdays a year,” Mr Spencer said. He suggested that there should be a notice of motion to amend the board’s regulations accordingly so that the change could take effect next year. “I’m very pleased to hear Mr Spencer’s statement,” said Mr R. K. Milne. “This matter has already received a bit of publicity” Mr A. S. Murray: Too much. Mr R. W. Sansom then moved notice to amend the board’s regulations, Mr Milne seconded, and the motion was carried without dissent.
