COMPETITIONS SOCIETY
“Finances On Sound Basis'”
The finances of the Christchurch Competitions Society are now on a sound basis. The accounts show an excess of income over expenditure amounting to £454, says the society’s president (Mr C. H. Plimmer) in his annual report “In spite of increased door receipts, we were still unable to make the festival income meet the expenditure. Our outgoings for the year are more than £2OOO and on entries of 3000 it costs nearly 15s to have each entry judged,” he said. "Over all the result of the year’s work must be considered satisfactory and our accumulated funds now stand at £1155 in addition to scholarship reserves of £172.” Mr Plimmer said that the sale of tickets for the Christmas raffle had resulted in a net profit of £566. Mr Plimmer says that the year finished with 155 financial members —an increase of 29 over last year’s total. The actual festival earlier in the year attracted a record entry of 3050 from 850 competitors, compared with 2812 last year when 705 competitors took part The St. James’ Theatre would not be available in future ’ and other arrangements would be necessary, a matter being considered by the executive, said Mr Plimmer. “All the judges spoke highly of the talent of the performers, which they considered well up to the standard of other major festivals," he said.
