RACING Cock Crow Selected In Feature Steeples

Cock Crow, the South Canterbury. Hack Steeples winner at Washdyke a fortnight ago, is selected to win the Teschemaker Steeples on the same course today. This rate is the feature cross-country event at the South Canterbury Hunt Club’s annual meeting. Although Cock Crow is rising 12 his age has had little effect on his ability as a ’chaser. In the South Canterbury Steeples he carried 10-3 in the lead for the last seven furlongs and finished the two and a' half miles with a much stronger run than the best of his rivals.

was still a clear second at the fest brush but lost interest very quickly when Baby. Toes headed him in a few strides after landing. Tut Tut was fourth in a longer gap and it appeared that only casualties gained him that place for he started to tire badly seven furlongs from home. However, over the lighter country at Waimate last Saturday Tut Tut managed to lead for the best part of the last two miles, and lasted to beet the faster finishing No Offence by three-quarters of a length. No Offence had led the chase after Tut Tut all the way and bad a much stronger finish than the winner or the third placetetter, Baby Toes. He meets Tut Tut on 71b better terms this time and Baby Toes at the same level. It should be sufficient for him to reverse positions with Tut Tut

end could possibly make him the strongest rival for Cock Orow. The best of the others are expected to be Pearly Gate or the Rd crarton-trained Mwtinguet. , Pearly Gate was the runner-up to Sarkey in the corresponding event on the first day of the South Canterbury Jockey Club's winter meeting. He tailed badly when tried once against the hack 'chasers at Trentham meantime, but will probably have better ground and weaker opposition to contend with this time. Mistinguet will be having her

The minor nlacings in the South Canterbury Steeples were Baby Toes, Mozart, and Tut Tut, but only Baby Toes was capable of making a race of it with Cock Crow in the run from the last fence. He ran the winner to half a length, but it wee a margin he failed to reduce after a battling last half-furlong. Baby Toes meets Cock Crow on 41b better terms this time, but unless his jumping has improved considerably—and it hadn’t at Waimate last Saturday—then the Gore-trained top-weieht should prove his master again. The free-going Mozart was well beaten eight lengths behind Baby Toes after racing close up on Cock Crow until the straight He

first race test over country. If she performs as well as she has recently in schooling runs at Riccarton the best of the others might find her hard to match for both pace on the flat and jumping ability. A sound preparation in hunting fields during the season Should have conditioned her to run out the two miles and a half solidly. Van Da Hum, Sydtrev and Cassius have been scratched for the Teschemaker Steeples. Sydtrev is .to start in the Pareora Steeples for which he will probably be a strong favourite following an impressive all-the-way win in the corresponding race at Waimate last Saturday.

Amateur Riders The Pareora Steeples is one of two races on the programme which cater for amateur riders. They will also be seen ip action on the flat in the Duke of Gloucester Cup later in the day. The double will be on the Claremont Handicap and the Levels Hack Handicap. McCool, from Riccarton. and the Oram-trained Royal Order might be the successful combination. Mattock. Kelp and King Cassock N>ve been scratched from the Claremont Handicap. This allows.- Glenrowan and Marsana to re-enter the field. Outer Space and Red Mane have dropped out of the Hadlow Hack Hurdles, and Oversight will run in the Duke of Gloucester Cup instead of the Pareora Steeples. None of the six reserves in the Gleniti Stakes gained re-entry to the field.

The weather in South Canterbury has been mainly fine during the week and the track is reported to be ip excellent winter order.
