Referees' Callings
Referees have to put up with a good deal of abuse, good-natured and otherwise, during the course of their valuable services to sport. Soccer referees are not excepted, and at times are accused of being “blind," "bigoted,” “biassed,” “incompetent,” or told they could not run a kindergarten. It is interesting, therefore, to see a list of the occupations of the local soccer “whistlers.” They include: footwear machinist, storeman, smallgoods manufacturer, postman, milkman, carrier, butcher, cutter, fireman, salesman, insurance representative, schoolmaster, tyre retreader, plasterer, carpenter, cook, manager, boiler attendant, bus station employee, plumber, student, electrician, aero radio technician, army, engineering.
