Australian Move On U.S. Synthetics (N.Z. Press Association —Copyright) SYDNEY, July 22. The-New South Wales Wheat and Woolgrowers’ Association will ask the Federal Government to impose heavy tariffs on imports of synthetics from the United States. •Delegates to the association’s annual conference tn Sydney yesterday, carried a motion asking for extra duties on United, States synthetics. They asked the Government to continue the heavy duties “until such time ’as the United States removed the import duties on Australian wool.” Mr J. Clay, a delegate, said synthetics were the biggest danger to Australian wool. America protects its woolgrowers so why should we let United States synthetics enter Australia freely Mr Clay asked. Another delegate,. Mr N. P. Eagle, criticising the motion, said it was “double-edged.” He said the proposed extra dufies could bring relatiatory measures from the United States.
AUSTRALIAN WOOL IN STORE 4 p.c. Down On Last Year’s Record (N.Z Press Association—Copyngnti MELBOURNE, July 22. Wool received into selling brokers’ stores in Australia for disposaTin 1960-61 is estimated at 4,729,000 bales—4 per cent, below the, record established in 1959-60. This preliminary estimate is announced by the president of the National Council of Wool-sell-ing Brokers (Mr J. S. Gale) after a conference wtih representatives of this body, the Australian Woolgrowers’ and Graziers’ Council and the Bureau of Agricultural Economics. Mr Gale said Merino wool would present 76 per cent of the total weight of greasy wool to be received into store. The average net weight a bale greasy was estimated at 3021 b. Total wool production (expressed as a greasy equivalent) was provisionally estimated at 1,600.000.0001 b.
Dandenong Buy.—Cox Brothers (Australia). Ltd., retailers, continuing its expansion by acquiring existing businesses, today announced the takeover of Partons of Dandenong, by its subsidiary, Foy and Gibson, Ltd. Partons has been established for 44 years in Dandenong, an outer Melbourne suburb. Price of the deal is ndt disclosed, but the transaction is for cash. Assets acquired include freehold, plant, fittings and stock.
