HONG KONG BOY “ADOPTED”
South Brighton Cubs’ Project
Aided by the enthusiasm of theit new cubmistress, Mrs R Shepherd, 18 boys of the South Brighton cub pack have “adopted” a 10-year-old Chinese boy through the Save the Children Fund, a unique undertaking by any group of the Scout movement in New Zealand. Miss M. G. Havelaar, president of the Save the Children Fund, wrote to the cubs outlining cases of two boys in dire circumstances. Not financially able to sponsor both boys, Ching Suk Ming, of Kowloon, Hong Kong, with the larger number of brothers and sisters to whom food and clothing could be sent, was chosen for “adoption.** The cubs then elected Clifford Shepherd as secretary and Grant Bates as treasurer to deal with all the business side of their new venture. The cubs are now committed to find £ll a year, the cost of food, and first £5 10s must be sent in to the organisation.
To raise this amount the cubs are doing odd jobs at home and for neighbours, refilling any other assistance from their parents. Weekly contributions from their pocket money add to the total. A comics stall has raised 12s. To date, after four weeks, the weekly collections amount to £3 Is 9d.
Some warm clothing given by the cubs’ parents has already been sent to Ching, in spite of the costly postage. The cubs are looking forward to receiving letters in reply soon from Ching, and arrangemenU are in hand for a New Brighton resident to translate the letters frlto English.
