Table Tennis CANTERBURY TITLES

Top Players Win

No seeded players were eliminated in the senior events when the Canterbury table tennis championships commenced at the Selwyil Street Hall last evening. Entries were good, with the total of 54 in the men’s singles the best since 1953.

One good performance in the men’s singles was that of K. Cassidy, the Eagles A reserve grade player. Cassidy, a promising intermediate, was a surprise choice for tire Canterbury team to play in the national championships next month, but he immediately justified the selectors’ confidence in him with a fine win over J. Lelliott.

Lelliott, from the Avonside club, is. one of the better players in the A grade, but last evening Cassidy matched him in steadiness and in attacking ability. Covering the table well with his long reach, Cassidy was rarely caught out of position and, after an even struggle in the first two games, he hit some fine winners to win the third and fourth by a good margin of points.

Another A reserve player, R. Howe, had a good win, over the veteran A grade player and former Canterbury men’s doubles champion, N. C. O’Brien. Howe, a quick hitter, is another of the oromlsing younger players. M. A. Cox had a struggle to beat S. R Beder, ih a dour match, and the junior E. O. Woodward, played well against N. C. Orr. A surprise l in the women’s singles was the defeat of Miss C » alh^X,. by Mrs A ' Williamson.' Mrs Williamson does not play in the inter-club competition,* but usually reappears for tournaments, and invariably causes some U ? o SetS n^'‘ ,th T h ? r na SSfog defensive r W ,llia mson and Mrs bhadbolt had easy wins, but .?• May was not as convincing tn her two singles matches.
