Obituary MR R. V. HUGHES

A former member of the Society of Friends’ Ambulance Unit in the First "World War, Mr Reginald Victor Hughes, died in Christchurch this week. He was 66. Mr Hughes was born in Bradford, Yorkshire. During the war he was engaged in active service with the ambulance unit in France. The -unit, a small one, was awarded the Croix de Guerre for its work. He emigrated to New Zealand in 1924 and settled in Wellington, where he became a sales repre-

sentative for the Nugget Polish Company. Ten years later he was transferred to Christchurch to become assistant manager, and was appointed manager in 1955. In 1957 he was made a director of the company, the first local director the company had appointed. Mr Hughes acted as clerk for both the Wellington and Christ-' church meetings of' .the Society of Friends. In- Christchurch he was a foundation member of Heritage, an executive member in 1945, and president from 1955 to 1957. For a year Mr Hughes was chairman of the Christchurch committee of the . Council of Organisations for Relief Services Overseas. He was a foundation member of the Christchurch Business Men’s Club. During the Second World War, Mr Hughes founded a refugee organisation to assist Quaker refugees from Europe. He is survived by his wife, a son, and a daughter.

MR R. A. LILLEY Mr Ronald Alexander Lilley, the founder of Hornby Cash Cycling Club, has died in Christchurch. He was 50. The club’s first race, an “all round the block” event at Hornby, was organised by Mr Lilley and took place in February. 1945. In 1949, he coached the wellknown Christchurch rider, T. Voice, who was the Silver Helmet champion at English Park at that time. Mr Lilley is survived by his wife.
