LAND NEEDED FOR ROADS
Difficulties With Finance
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. July 22.
The Minister of Works (Mr Watt) said in Auckland tonight that he would have to discuss with the Minister of Finance (Mr Nordmeyer) ways and , means of buying land for motorways. “Something will have to be done,” Mr Watt said. “We’ve got the money for building the motorways, but we have not enough to buy land in preparation.” Mr Watt feaid he was not in favour of road tolls. With the traffic density in New Zealand, he said, it simply would not be worth setting up and maning the number of toll booths required at all turning-off places. The National Roads Board appealed to Mr Nordmeyer before the Budget for a diversion of the 4d extra petrol tax from the Consolidated Fund to the board to buy land, he said.
