CHINESE BOMB
“Closer Than Believed”
LONDON, July 22. A number of Japanese scientists believe China may be closer to producing a small atom bomb than the Western world generally believes, says the “Scotsman.” One expert on nuclear fission has said that there is considerable substance in recent Peking claims that Chinese workers and technicians can produce atom bombs in the near future. He recalled that in January, 1958, a scientific and technical commission was created under the State Council to concentrate on nuclear research and development. In March, 1958, a military scientific institute was established in Peking arid in September, China’s atomic reactor and cyclotron began operating. The equipment was supplied by Russia under an
agreement signed in April, 1955. promising Soviet assistance on nuclear power. Since 1956, a number of Chinese scientists and technicians have received training at the newlyestablished united nuclear institute at Dovna, in the Soviet Union.
