CLASH IN JAPAN
Students And Police Fight (Rec. 10:30 p.m.) ’ TOKYO, July 22. Police said today that 35 students and policemen were injured this morning in hand-to-hand fighting at Omuta, southern Japan. About 300 .students made “a planned attack” on a police cordon guarding a police station and mining company offices. i . , ■ The clash was the first violence in days in the mining town where the Mitsui Mining Company and the miners were attempting to reach agreement Over an 11-month-old strike.
About 7000 striking miners and students demonstrated today in the town. The students were members of Zengakuren, the militant Federation of Students’ SelfGovernment Associations, and they went to Omuta from Tokyo to support the miners.
Police said during the demonstration that the group of students launched an attack against the police ranks. Fierce fighting developed before the students were forced back. Twenty-four students and three coalminers who threw sand at the police were detained.
