Six Changes For Test
I From GRAEME JENKINS. N2PA stag Correspondent] (Rec. 11.15 pm.) CAPE TOWN, July 21.
There are six changes in the New Zealand team for the second test from the one that lost to South Africa in the first match of the series. The only one that causes much surprise is the dropping of M. W. Irwin from the front row.
His place has been taken by the veteran, I. J. Clarke, who is now playing his second series against South Africa. The team is:— D. B. Clarke. R. F. McMullen, K. F. Laidlaw, J. R. Watt T. R. Lineen, S. R. Nesbit. K. C. Briscoe. D. J. Graham, K. R. Tremain, R. H. Horsley, I. N. Mac Ewan, C. E. Meads. W. J. Whineray, D. Young, I. J. Clarke.
The second live-eighths, T. R. Lineen, has been selected provisionally. Another who got only a partial clearance from the specialist was the flanker, P. F. H. Jones, but it was decided not to risk him.
Those playing in their first test are Horsley, Nesbit, and Laidlaw at centre. Even had there not been injuries, it is likely that all three would be in the side. The team was announced after a training run today. Lineen injured a shoulder in the match at Port Elizabeth and has been given only a partial clearance. Laidlaw, who deserves his test place after a series of good matches, is down to play at centre, but if Lineen is unable to play Laidlaw will probably play at second five-eighths. In that case, McMullen, who is selected to play on the left wing, will move to centre or S. G. Bremner could be brought in as second five-eighths. [South African Team, Page 20.]
