RESERVE FOR REDCLIFFS
Big Area For Development
Long-term development of the Redcliffs riflo range area as a reserve was outlined to the City Council by • the Director of Reserves (Mr H. G. Gilpin). The area, of 91 acres, has about 25 per cent reasonably flat land, with the rest hilly slopes. “No other city reserve is comparable for diversity of scenic beauty, physical character and potential possibilities for landscape effects," Mr Gilpin said. Major features of the development were summarised by Mr Gilpin as follows; — A children’s play area, with provision for a splash pool. Five grounds for field games. Two permanent car parks with provision for 400 cars and room for extension.
A picnic ground of 10 acres, to include a ravine to be established in native bush and walking tracks. Landscaping, with the establishment of bush and a hope to encourage native bird life, and extensive plantings of trees and shrubs, exotic and indigenous.
The estimated cost of the overall ground development, including a finished sown surface, was put at £10,300 by Mr Gilpin, and ap-pi-oximately £4500 would be required for ground development of the first stage of the project. The council approved in principle the development of the area.
It was also agreed that the reserve be named Barnett Park to commemorate the name of Mr M. J. Barnett, the retired director of reserves.
