BARE BACK LINE IS POPULAR IN LONDON

LONDON. In London the women are baring their backs. In front the necklines are as high as grandma’s were. They are even wearing long sleeves. Skirts are full for the young, and slim for those who have reached the age of elegance. The verdict of the men is, “very nice, too.” Perhaps the men never really cared for the deep vee neckline in front, the daring decolletage, the plunge, or the strapless evening gowns. Not on their wives, anyway. Black seems to be most popular for the bare back look. In fabric, the choice is wider—taffeta, lace, linen, brocade, satin, silk, jersey. In style, the versions are many. You can have the vee bare back, a really deep vee, the width of the shoulder straps or sleeves. You can have the square bare back coming as low as four or five inches above the natural waistline. A nice idea here is to frame the square with satin rib-

bon, or trim it with an enormous rose—red, yellow, or self fabric. You can have the oval bare back, in softly-draped chiffon or jersey, forming a cowt You can have the chameleon dress for the afraid—r bare back dress with a small “gilet” or insertion which can be pressstudded to cover up the bare back. The bare back fashions illustrated are, at left, a dress in fine jersey. The soft, high neckline plunges into a loose cowl at the back, forming an oval. Loveliest in parma violet, the slim-moulded line is right for the over twenties. At centre, ribbon-embroidered nylon net, the belled skirt is built out over its stiffened underskirts. It would be pretty in white, mocca, green or black. The bare back here is a sloping vee line. A black ribbed silk cocktail dress Is shown on the right The low square-necked back is the starting point of back interest continued with a row of tiny bows which go down to the hemline. The skirt is very full.
