GIRLS’ NAUTICAL TRAINING CORPS

Senior Organisation Formed A sea training organisation for girls of 18 and over has been formed in Christchurch by the Girls’ Nautical Training Corps. The Girls’ Nautical Training Corps was begun in England in 1942 to train girls of 14 to 18 for the Women’s Royal Naval Service. When the war ended, the training was found to be so popular that the corps was continued as a voluntary youth organisation. The senior division of the Girls Nautical Training Corps will give a more detailed training than that given to the cadet divisions. The same smart uniform will be worn by the senior cadets, and they will receive a grounding in naval drill and parade procedure. They will not be a pre-service training corps.

The training will consist of a probationary training period of 10 weeks, when they will receive a grounding in G.N.T.C. routines and naval terms. After this they will be entitled to wear the uniform, and the training will be expanded into courses of instruction, lasting from two to eight weeks, in such subjects as signalling, voice training, naval history and traditions, nautical terms naval ships of today, life in the W.R.N.S., travel procedure for visiting foreign countries, home nursing, and elementary navigation. Members may study for specialist badges in subjects such as signalling and boat work Practical training will also be given in rowing and sailing in the summer week-ends.
