MENTAL HOSPITAL ESCAPERS
Valley Residents Alarmed (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 21. Ohariu valley residents were frightened to go outside their homes after dark because of the large number of inmates who had escaped from the Porirua Mental Hospital in recent weeks, Cr. R. H. A. Best told a meeting of the Makara County Council today. ’ Some women, when alone, carried loaded firearms if they had to leave the house or go into darkened rooms, he said. Residents also held fears for the safety of their children who could be accosted by escaped patients while on their way to or from school. The council adopted a suggestion by Cr. Best that the council write to the Minister of Health about “the apparent lack of supervision” at the Porirua Hospital. .
