ROUGH TASMAN CROSSING
Drums Of Molasses Broken Open (New Zealand Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, July 20. About 2200 gallons of molasses from 50 drums which burst open during a stormy nine-day voyage across the Tasman were pumped from the hold of the inter-colon-ial vessel Babinda into the sea at New Plymouth today. The vessel carried a cargo of 625 tons of molasses from Bundaberg, Queensland, to Onehunga, where 900 of a total of 2286 drums were unloaded. The Babinda then continued to New Plymouth, where the rest of the molasses will be unloaded. The rough weather in the Tasman delayed the ship three days. A ship’s officer said today the drums containing molasses were often broken, but not usually in such quantities. He described the Tasman storm as exceptional. The Babinda battled against 60-knot winds and the drums burst as they rolled around in the storm.
