FLOOD CONTROL WORK
£1.3 Million Spent By Council Last Year (New Zealand Preu Association) WELLINGTON. July 20. The Soil Conservation and Rivers Control Council spent £1,342,042 during the year ended March 31 last, according .to the annual report tabled in the House of Representatives. Although it was the highest expenditure ever recorded, it was less than the amount voted, mainly because of the absence of floods and consequent expensive floods restoration works.
Summarised reports of progress on the council's major flood control schemes were: Piako, river, Hauraki: Engineering plans were nearly completed. The scheme would cost £1,380,000. Heretaunga Plains: A flood control scheme to cost £600,000 is being considered. Lower Manawatu: Scheme costing £1,500,000 well under way and total expenditure during coming year expected to be £500,000. Wairau valley, Marlborough: Work on £1,470,000 scheme to
start during the year. Orari river, South Canterbury: “Very good progress.” Lower Clutha river: £1,365,000 scheme approved.
