HEATHCOTE RIVER POLLUTION
Minister’s Assurance (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, July 20. An assurance that after completion of plans now in progress the lower reaches of the Heathcote river would be restored to a reasonable standard of purity was given in the House of Representatives this afternoon by the Minister of Marine (Mr Fox). He was replying to a question by Mr N. E. Kirk (Government, Lyttelton). “I am advised that the Pollution Advisory Council is aware of the unsatisfactory state of the lower reaches of the Heathcote river,” said Mr Fox. “The council is in close touch with the proposals put forward by the Christchurch Drainage Board to abate the pollution. Loan proposals amounting to £1,540,000 have recently been approved.”
