FORECAST TO MIDNIGHT

Situation.—A deep depression centred near Macquarie Island is moving southwards, and an extensive complex trough of low pressure covering much of the Tasman Sea is moving eastwards. Forecast: Canterbury.—Moderate south-westerlies developing, probably this afternoon, with cloudy skies and showers with colder temperatures. Outlook: showers. Marlborough.—North-westerlies, fresh to strong in exposed areas; changeable weather, with showery periods but some fair intervals; becoming cooler. Outlook: scattered showers. Nelson.—Moderate northerlies predominating; showers about the ranges, otherwise mainly cloudy but some more general rain is likely late in the day; moderate temperatures. Outlook: showers in the ranges, otherwise fair. West Coast.—Mainly moderate northerlies at first, but fresh south-westerlies developing later; changeable, cool, showery weather. Outlook: showers.
