UP-TO-DATE STATISTICS
Necessity For Speed “Accurate and adequate statistics of the nation's life are indispensable to an adequate appraisal of economic and social affairs but the statistics must also be timely if development is to proceed smoothly. If statistics indicate the need for remedial action they must be available as soon as possible,” says the annual report of the Department of Statistics. As economic factors multiply and become more inter-related the greater the need for emphasis on timeliness. For some time the department has been endeavouring to speed up the release of trade statistics. Information which is vital to a country dependent on overseas trade is being delayed because compilation must follow completion of customs tariff collection. A new combined classification method where classification of trade into types of commodities is shown simultaneously With classification for customs purposes is being perfected and may allow a speedier release of the requisite figures, says the report.
