The Free State kicked off. but the New Zealanders were soon on the attack. After five minutes Clarke had a snap pot at goal from the 10yard mark, but lust missed. Eleven minutes into the half the Free State front row was penalised in a scrum five yards from the touchline and six yards into New Zealand territory. Clarke's kick at goal fel) Just short and to the left of the posts. Clarke had a second chance of goaling from a penalty In the fifteenth minute from fairly close in. but he missed. Midway through the half Clarke
has another shot at goal from over half-way, but it again fell short. Try to Jones Meads and Tremain led the All Blacks on a foray in the twentyninth minute in the hall, and the well-marked Jones, following up fast, took a pass from Trematn to crash through for a try, which was a deserved reward. Clarke converted.
All Blacks S. Orange Free State 0. Almost immediately the All Blacks were back within striking distance of the line. Watt, on the right wing, who forced the Free State full-back, Botha, to fumble on his own line by fast following up from the kickoff, was next to score for the All Blacks—in the thirty-second minute. Adrian Clark put in a perfect kick for the corner. Watt took It well and crewed five yards from the corner. Clarke missed the kick. AD Blades (, Orange Free State 0. Then the match took a dramatic turn. Botha kicked two penalties
State side to make the score 8-6 . the All Blacks* favour. Up to this stage the AU Blacks had been penalised 10 times to Free State's Clarke started the second half badly for the All Blacks, his kickoff going out on the fuU. and within seconds the AU Blacks were defending their line only feet away from Penalty Kicks Miss Adrian Clarke slipped through a gap nicely In the tenth minute of the second half, but was dragged down only a yard from the line in front of the goal. Free State managed to clear. Clarke missed his fourth penalty in the eleventh minute, then hooked his fifth penalty, taken from the twenty-five line. In the fifteenth minute of the half When Don Clarke knocked on 10 yards from the goal line things looked grim for the AU Blacks. Free State won the scrum and the ball shot along the line to the left wing. Du Plessis, who was pushed out by a desperate Clarke tackle about s foot from the corner. Eventually Clarke cleared to 30 cards out. but from this position the All Blacks were penalised again for Botha to kick his third goal and give Free State a 9-8 lead. One minute later Clarke had a chance of restoring the status quo, but again he missed. In the twentv-nfnth minute Watt was gl"en a chance to kick a goal from 28 cards and then a minute later Clarke recorded his seventh miss, this time from 10 cards. Final score: Orange Free State 9.
