LABOUR PARTY AND PRESS
Mr Sim, Mr Faulkner Differ (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 7. The Labour Party wanted to take over New Zealand’s free press so it could use it for its own propaganda, Mr G. F. Sim (Opposition, Waikato) said in the House of Representatives today. He was speaking in the Address-in-Reply debate. “New Zealand’s press has served the country well, but Labour members have viciously attacked it” Mr Sim said. Mr A. J. Faulkner (Government, Roekill) said Mr Sim’s allegations were unfair to former servicemen who had fought for the freedom of the press. “The member for Waikato fought overseas and he will remember how we used to listen to Radio Berlin in the desert. But I believe that in his remarks today he has himself inmitated the Goebelesque technique,” Mr Faulkner said. Opposition members protested at the expression “Gobelesque technique” but Mr Speaker refused to rule it out of order.
Mr Faulkner said he did not attack the press. “I Just do what the press does to me as a Labour member of Parliament—l ignore it,” he added.
