PARLIAMENT’S DIARY

When the House of Representatives resumed yesterday afternoon, Mr R. A. Keeling (Government, Gisborne), obtained leave for the Licensing Committee to sit during the sitting time of the House. He explained that the committee was completing its report, and hoped to present it next week. The Minister of Finance (Mr A. H. Nordmeyer) tabled the Economic Survey. Four petitions were presented and referred to the relevant committees. Four day’s leave of absence was granted to Mr J. K. McAlpine (Opposition Selwyn) because of illness. Members asked Ministers 19 questions. The Christchurch District Drainage Amendment Bill was introduced by Mr N. G. Pickering (Government, St Albans), and the Whangarei Harbour Board Empowering Bill by Mr D. N. McKay (Opposition, Marsden). Both measures were rear' a first time. Reports presented included those of the Lands and Survey Department the New Zealand Gas Council, and the Earthquake and War Damage Commission. The House then went on with the Address-in-Reply debate, the speakers being:— Opposition: Messrs G. F. Sim (Waikato). J. J. Maher (Otaki). B. V. Cooksley (Wairarapa), J. R. Hanan (Invercargill), D. J. Eyre (North Shore), and W. 8., Tennent (Manawatu). Government: Messrs A. J. Faulkner (Roskill), T. Omana (Eastern Maori), Mrs L M. Ratana (Western Maori), the Minister of Marine (Mr W. A.
