AVAILABILITY OF TIMBER

Company's Next Move “This IS good news for Canterbury,” said Mr J. Roy Smith, a director of Canterbury Pulp and Paper, Ltd., last evening, commenting on the decision of the Government to remove controls from the'pulp and paper industry. “However, the deputation to the Prime Minister (Mr Nash) will still proceed. We have to ascertain the availability of timber in Canterbury for the industry. This will include timber from State forests and other sources. “The way is now open for the company to proceed in various directions, but we will have to know just what timber will be available for'the industry.” "The firm will proceed to satisfy i.tself that the establishment of a tnill in Canterbury would be an economic proposition,” said the secretary of New Zealand Forest Products. Ltd. (Mr R. H. Smythe) on behalf of the chairman of directors of the Company (Sir David Henry) who- is overseas. Investigations would have to be carried out on the availability of timber, the amount of water available and the question of disposal of effluent from the proposed mill. “The investigations will take another six months.” he said The announcement would not mean an immediate expansion by the company in Canterbury or in Nelson There would be a general survey, but there were no concrete proposals' at present until more information ■ was available, Mr Smythe said.
