TEACHERS’ BALL
More Than 300 Guests
Black and white poster cartoons burlesquing some of the modern trends in education, the major theme of the decorations at the Winter Garden last evening, set the mood for light-hearted relaxation at the annual ball of the North Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute.
In tire foyer on a large blackboard was a cartoon giving a subtle interpretation of “adjustment of attention." The cartoons were the work of Mr J. Masterton, lecturer in art and viceprincipal at the Christchurch Teachers’ College. More than 300 attended the ball, the seventh held by the branch. Official Guests Specially invited guests included the following:—Mr I* J. Broomfield, senior inspector of primary schools for Canterbury, and Mrs Broomfield, who is herself president of the Canterbury Federation of Parent-Teacher Asssociations; Mr A M. Grigor, secretary of the North Canterbury branch of the N.Z,E:I., and Mrs Grigor; Mr W. J. Cartwright,, chairman of the Christchurch Post-primary Schools Council, and Mrs Cartwright; Mr G. Guy. principal of the Christchurch Teachers’ College, and Mrs Guy: Mr A. Greenwood, chairman of the Canterbury Education Board, and Mrs Greenwood; Mr W. P. Spencer, secretary-manager of the Canterbury Education Board, and Mrs Spencer: Mr H. C. Anderson, president of the Canterbury School Committees’ Association, and Mrs Anderson; Mr C. T. Ford, acting professor of Education. University of Canterbury, and Mrs Ford; Miss R. Hay, president of the North Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Women Teachers’ Association; Miss B. B. Evans, Dominion president of the New Zealand Women Teachers’ Association.
Guests were received by Mr E. E. Booth, president of the North Canterbury branch of the institute, and Mrs Booth. Mrs Booth wore a full-length gown of black nylon taffeta ribbon-striped in emerald, made with cuffed neckline, swathed sash and back fullness in the skirt.
The ball committee was as follows:—Mrs F. C. Hannah, Misses M. P. McLachlan (chairman) and P. Gaines. Messrs R. W. Conwav, J. R. Feeley, B. Hansen, R. D. Johnston and C. L. Martin (secretary).
