ELEVATED ROAD TO WHARF

Plans for the elevated roadway to the steamer express wharf to be built by the Lyttelton Harbour Board have been approved by the Lyttelton Borough Council. The approval is' subject to satisfactory arrangements being made with the Harbour Board regarding possible alterations to such services as electricity, gas mains, water mains and stormwater drainage “We want amplification and more, specific information and estimates of costs to come along beiore we commit ourselves,” suggested the secretary-manager (Mr A. L. Burk) when the council’s letter was received at yesterday’s meeting of the board. Mr G. Manning: Is it essential that these services be adjusted? “That is why I make my recommendation,” replied Mr Burk. A change in services could cost a lot of money, said Mr W. P. Glue, and the Lyttelton costs should be looked into. The cost of altering, services at ■ the Colombo street overbridge was £lB,OOO.
Mr W. B. Laing: I don't think the Lyttelton roadway and the Colombo street overbridge would be comparable. The board decided that the chairman (Mr A. A. Macfarlane), Mr Burk, and the engineer-in-chief (Mr J. A. Cashin) should discuss the question with the borough council and report to the next meeting.
