(Rec. 10 p.m.) LONDON, July 6. The number of quallDers for the British Open—7t—is the lowest in the history of the championship .under modern conditions. The maximum wore .to qualify was 147. Among those who failed were the Belgian, Flory van Donck (154) who, only 10 days ago, won the world championships trophy in the Canada Cup, the American, Frank Stranahan, twice British amateur champion, two former runners-up. Harry Bradshaw (150) and Dave Thomas (151), and the former champions. Henry Cotton (150), Fred Daly (152) and Max Faulkner (149). Twenty-eight players on 148 seemed to have a good chance of qualifying, but Cherif Said, of Egypt, and Stanley Taggart, of England, came in with 140's. The best score yesterday was returned by the title-holder, Gary Player (South Africa), 'with 135. He was followed by Ireland’s Christy O'Connor (137), and Fidel de Luca (Argentina) with 139. Gene Sarazen (United States), who won as long ago as 1932, is well up among the leaders with 141. Sarazen is playing so well he could create perhaps the biggest upset in the history of the open and win the title again.
With him on 141 are Australia's Peter Thomson, Britain’a G. Hunt and Scotland’s Bobby Walker, who at 17 was the youngest to qualify. AU qualifying scores are wiped off the slate for the championship proper, beginning today. Van Donck was in bed with a heavy cold before the championship opened, and, stiU far from fit, he could not cope with yesterday’s heavy rain. His 80 on the Old course—42 out—“killed” him with a 154 total' Cotton, however, was unlucky. If only a. tew of his short putts had dropped, he would have joined the qualifiers. A 79 on the New course put him just outside with his 150. The card of the American champion, Arnold Palmer, was marred by a 7 at the 560-yards 14th, where a cut drive was blown out of bounds, and by two fi’s at the third and 16th holes. “I can’t remember when I last had a 7 and two 6’s on one card." he said. “But I am quite satisfied. I am glad I’ve got this bad round behind me.** The sole New Zealand entry. E. A. Southerden, 76. 80—156, failed to qualify. Qualifiers for the 72 holes competition proper over the Old Course (with totals and two round scores) today, were:— 135; G, Player (South Africa), 67,
