Indoor Basketball WIGRAM BEATS UNIVERSITY
Best Game Seen This Year The defeat of University by Wigram was a feature of the men's basketball matches which were continued on Tuesday evening. Details are:— University v. Wigram In a match of thrilling shooting, both teams played a passing man-to-man game. They provided the best game of basketball seen this year. D. Wajile in the pivot for University drove hard for 12 good points. He was overshadowed only by the speed, drive and shooting of Wigram’s D. de Felice, whose 13 points were well earned. Try as it might University could not wholly control its back board, and was often defeated by S. Tunnicliffe, B. Belcher and A. Stack. University, too. had its better moments. Most of these came from fast breaks and long passes. Unfortunately for University, it did not turn all these chances to points, and only a very determined effort by W. Smith, R. Sneddan and D. Waple in the last five minutes brought the team close to a win. Y-Boys v. B.G.H. B Y-Boys had most of the game its own way in a fast and often rough match against BGH B. Controlled by McDougall, Y-Boys’ basketball was of a high. standard and it earned the team many points. Steady, movement and good feeding by H. Maurer in the centre for Y-Boys allowed McDougall to set shoot consistently well. He scored 16 points. Although he had a fairly easy night, K. Ewing persefvered throughout with good rebounding and passing and set the pace for some very good fast breaks from which C. Harley scored eight points. , •. In the BGH team, N. Little, W. Grimmer and E. Tuller all impressed with steady displays. Little handled particularly well under the basket and was unlucky not to score more often. In the last five minutes, the game deteriorated when - many unnecessary fouls ended a one-sided match. BGH A v. TEACHERS’ COLLEGE BGH was too experienced all round for its opponents and although it was made to fight for every point, its ball control was too solid and varied for Teachers’ College, which could not stop the scoring shots. a , B. (Gardner and B. Leary, of College, although both free on a number of occasions, were not fed fast enough by their guards, and lost many scoring opportunities. The left-forward, J. Dempsey. topscored with nine points for BGH. A good fake and’ drive let him inside the defence, where he fed McKay and R. Thomson, had some good opportunities for scoring. Results are:— A.
