SOUTHERN HORSES

Arrival At Trentham "The Press” Special Service i WELLINGTON, July 6. The first of the Sputh Island visitors were at Trentham this morning. They included Melodic, Believe ’ Me,- Pearly Gate, Cashmere, Hundred Grand, Nairn Bridge, and Master Ascot. Most of them have shown form recently and they appeared in good condition. AU were let off with pace work this morning. Melodic has been one of the most consistent performers in the south this season. He graduated from hack ranks at the New Zealand Cup meeting in November and since has recorded five wins in 10 attempts. He has made his mark both as a sprinter and a stayer and he has shown ability to handle heavy conditions. Believe Me won the Birthday Handicap at Wingatui last month. He was beaten narrowly by Melody Man in the Parliamentary Handicap last year, and he looks ready to extend his record in thdvnext week. Pearly Gate, formerly trained in the north, has shown promising form since being transferred to the south. He has recorded a third and a second at his two latest attempts and may be a lightweight danger in the Martri Hack and Hunters' Steeplechase. Mixed Form An expert at handling the heaviest of conditions, Cashmere has mixed his form lately, but he gave promise of returning to the winning list when he finished third over a mile at Wingatui recently after making the pace to the furlong. He may be better suited by the seven furlongs of the Stewards* Handicap. Hundred Grand will be attempting the hat-trick in the Woburn Hack Handicap, having won the Southland Te Tua Hack Handicap on May 21 and the Southern Hack Handicap at Wingatui on June 6at his last two starts. On both occasions the going was heavy. Nairn Bridge is another laststart winner engaged in the Whyte Handicap, having finished resolutely over six furlongs at the Dunedin meeting. A disappointment on the flat. Master Ascot has done weU as a hurdler and his latest form in the south warrants respect in the Vittoria Hack Hurdles. Big Chief, the outstanding hack hurdler at the Great Northern meeting, was also let off with easy work this morning. He is a plain gelding, but obviously he is much better than his appearance would suggest Otara, after doing light work, was lame when he returned to the scraping sheds. It is thought he trod on a stone and bruised a foot

Although Volition and Cavallo have been withdrawn from their first day engagement it is possible they will be on hand for the later days.
